The Invisible Knapsack - Being a white therapist

‘I have come to see white privilege as an invisible package of unearned assets that I can count on cashing in each day, but about which I was "meant" to remain oblivious. White privilege is like an invisible weightless knapsack of special provisions, maps, passports, codebooks, visas, clothes, tools and blank checks.’ Peggy McIntosh
As a white therapist, how often do I notice what I have in my invisible knapsack?

We will use creative action methods in this one day workshop to explore some key issues around the existence and impacts of white privilege in therapeutic spaces, as they apply to ourselves as white therapists.
How can we clear some space to be more present and available for our clients in the room?

Staying completely in our heads or becoming emotionally overwhelmed are both potential pitfalls. We will pay attention to the somatic as well as emotional aspects of facing these powerful issues with openness. Working in action we will begin exploring how to increase in self-awareness, grow our political selves and enhance our professional learning in this area.
