The day will include a short opening and closing plenary and three workshop streams will be offered with participants attending one workshop (AM and PM).

1. Helping young people to create their own stories in action.

About the workshop: using a simple intervention participants will be taken through the process of story making and look at ways of putting the story into action and the rationale for using this method.

Facilitator bio: Kate Kirk is a psychodrama psychotherapist, trainer, supervisor and UKCP registered child and adolescent psychotherapist. She has worked with children and young people in all sorts of settings; most recently the last 16 years have been in CAMHS on the Isle of Man.

2. Playback Theatre: is it theatre or is it therapy?

About the workshop: Playback Theatre (PT) is a form of spontaneous creative improvisation using individual real-life stories as its ‘script’. A real ‘story’ is told by a group member and then immediately, respectfully, enacted by other participants, using a myriad of different theatrical resources, such as movement, role, sound, music, poetry, scene etc. This workshop will be a taster of some of the basics of Playback Theatre plus a consideration of how to apply them to our own client groups and perhaps come to our own conclusions about the theatre/therapy debate. We will have fun, be creative, develop our listening and empathic skills, play and tell our stories to each other. After all, we all have stories to tell ...

Facilitator bio: Diane Adderley was, in her first career, a professional actor & musician for over 20 years She then became a psychodramatist, sociodramatist and Playback Theatre Leadership graduate. She has been practising PT for 25 years with her home company, Playback Theatre Manchester, and has run workshops and trained new companies in both the UK and abroad. She is in private practice as a psychotherapist, trainer, coach, supervisor, PT performer and role-play actor in corporate settings.

3. Introduction to Action Methods

About the workshop: A demonstration in action, we will use some psychodrama tools and techniques to learn experientially and do some exploration together to see how action methods can be used. There will be some theory to take away and some fun to participate in, as well as some space to reflect.

Facilitator bio: Bernie has worked in Mental Health services for 14 years in a range of different roles. She is a Psychodrama Psychotherapist and a CBT Therapist, currently working in an NHS IAPT (Increasing Access to Psychological Therapies) service.
